In-Browser Optical QR Code Scanner
Scan, decode, and parse 2D Quick Response barcodes using your webcam, smartphone camera, or saved graphic files. PDFriend executes high-performance image binarization and pattern recognition directly inside your client environment using WebAssembly, ensuring complete privacy with zero external server transmission.
How In-Browser QR Decoding Works
Unlike web scanners that upload image files to backend cloud APIs for OCR analysis, this application processes video and bitmap frames locally:
- Direct Video Stream Slicing: When the camera is engaged, the HTML5 MediaDevices API captures raw video frames onto an offscreen canvas at up to 12 frames per second.
- Position Detection Pattern Localization: The decoder scans for the three concentric square finder patterns situated at the corners of every standardized QR code.
- Alignment & Perspective Correction: Geometrical distortion resulting from angled camera orientation or tilted surfaces is mathematically corrected using projective transformations.
- Reed-Solomon Error Correction: Even if up to 30% of the code surface is smudged, scratched, or glare-compromised, the mathematical error correction reconstructs the original bitstream.
Supported Payload Formats
The scanner automatically parses raw text payloads into structured, actionable formats:
| Payload Type | Data Format Schema | Scanner Action |
|---|---|---|
| Website URLs | https://domain.com/path | Direct safe link opening in new browser tab |
| Wi-Fi Credentials | WIFI:S:SSID;T:WPA;P:password;; | Parses network name, encryption type, and password |
| vCard Contacts | BEGIN:VCARD ... END:VCARD | Extracts contact name, phone, email, and organization |
| UPI Payments | upi://pay?pa=id@bank&pn=Name | Decodes VPA address and payee name parameters |
| Plain Text & Notes | Unformatted alphanumeric string | One-click copy to clipboard with instant confirmation |
Troubleshooting Optical Scanning Issues
If the decoder struggles to recognize a code from your webcam or photo file, consider the following technical factors:
- Focus & Resolution: Webcams with fixed focal lengths cannot resolve high-density QR codes held too close. Move the physical code 8 to 12 inches away from the lens.
- Glare & Reflections: Glossy paper, smartphone screens, and plastic lamination can produce bright specular reflections that wash out finder patterns. Angle the light source away from the code surface.
- Quiet Zone Margin: Standard QR specifications mandate an uninterrupted four-module white margin (quiet zone) around the perimeter. Cropping an image too tightly cuts off this boundary and prevents detection.
