Split PDF Online — Free, Private & Lossless

Need to pull out a few pages from a long document? Or break a 100-page report into neat chapters? PDFriend's Split PDF tool handles it all — right inside your browser, with zero uploads and zero quality loss.

Why people love this tool

Most “free” PDF splitters upload your file to a remote server, process it there, and email you a download link. That means your contract, medical report, or Aadhaar document sits on someone else's infrastructure — even if only for a few minutes.

PDFriend works differently. Your PDF never leaves your device. We use pdf-lib to copy pages directly inside your browser's memory, so the original fonts, vectors, images, and bookmarks come through untouched. There's no re-rendering, no rasterization, and no server round-trip.

After splitting, every output file goes through an integrity check — we verify the page count of each chunk and generate an SHA-256 fingerprint so you can be sure nothing was dropped or corrupted.

When you'd reach for Split PDF

  • • You received a 50-page bank statement but only need pages 12–18 for your loan application.
  • • A professor shared a semester's notes as one file — you want separate PDFs per chapter.
  • • Your office scanner dumped 200 receipts into a single PDF and you need individual files for expense claims.
  • • A government form requires uploading documents under 5 pages each, so you need to split a larger PDF accordingly.
  • • You're sharing a report with different teams and each team only needs their section.

How to Split a PDF

01

Upload your PDF

Drag and drop your file or click to browse. The tool loads every page as a thumbnail so you can see exactly what you're working with.

02

Pick a split mode

Choose from four modes — select individual pages, define custom ranges (e.g. 1-5, 8-12), split every N pages, or divide into equal parts.

03

Select your pages

Click thumbnails to toggle pages on or off, or use Select All / Deselect All for quick batch selection. A live counter shows how many pages you've picked.

04

Split & verify

Hit the Split button. Each output file is verified for page count and integrity. A detailed report appears before you can download.

05

Download

Grab individual files or download everything as a single ZIP. Files are named clearly — split_pages_1-5.pdf, split_pages_6-10.pdf, etc.

Four Ways to Split

Extract Selected Pages

Click on individual page thumbnails to cherry-pick exactly the pages you need. The selected pages get combined into one new PDF. Perfect when you need a handful of non-sequential pages — say pages 3, 7, and 15 from a 40-page document.

Split by Range

Type custom page ranges like "1-5, 8-12, 20-25" and the tool creates a separate PDF for each range. Great for breaking a report into logical sections — introduction, methodology, results — without manually selecting each page.

Every N Pages

Enter a number and the tool automatically slices your PDF into chunks of that size. A 100-page document with N=10 gives you 10 clean files of 10 pages each. Ideal for batch-printing or distributing portions to different people.

Equal Parts

Choose how many equal parts you want and the tool divides the document as evenly as possible. If a 31-page PDF is split into 3 parts, you get two files of 10 pages and one of 11. Simple and fair.

Your Privacy Comes First

We built PDFriend because we were tired of “free” tools that quietly upload your files to their servers. When you split a PDF here, the entire operation runs inside your browser using WebAssembly and JavaScript. Your document never touches a network request — not even briefly.

Zero uploads. Zero tracking. Your files stay on your machine.

Technical Detail

We use pdf-lib to parse the PDF structure and copy page objects directly. No image re-encoding, no font substitution, no quality degradation. The output is byte-level equivalent to extracting pages from the original.

Things to Keep in Mind

Password-protected PDFs need to be unlocked before splitting. If your PDF asks for a password when you open it, use our Compress & Unlock tool first.

Very large PDFs (500+ pages with heavy images) may take a few seconds to render all thumbnails. The split itself is fast — it's the preview generation that takes time.

If your PDF has interactive form fields that span multiple pages, splitting may affect the form's internal references. For simple documents this is never an issue.

Downloaded files may trigger a Windows security warning since they're generated in-browser. Right-click → Properties → Unblock to fix the preview.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is splitting a PDF really free?

Yes, completely free with no limits. There are no file size caps, no daily usage limits, and no account required. We monetize through optional ads, not by gating features.

Will the split files have the same quality as the original?

Absolutely. PDFriend copies page objects directly from the original PDF without any re-rendering or compression. Fonts, images, vectors, and metadata are preserved exactly as they are. It's a lossless operation.

Can I split a scanned PDF?

Yes. Scanned PDFs are just PDFs with embedded images — the split tool handles them the same way. Each page's image is copied over as-is, so there's no quality loss.

What happens to bookmarks and links after splitting?

Internal bookmarks that point to pages within the same split chunk will continue to work. Bookmarks pointing to pages in a different chunk won't resolve, since those pages are now in a separate file. External hyperlinks (URLs) are always preserved.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

If the PDF requires a password to open, you'll need to unlock it first. You can use our Compress & Unlock tool to remove the password, then split the unlocked file. PDFs with only print/copy restrictions (owner password) can usually be split directly.

How large a PDF can I split?

There's no hard limit — it depends on your device's available memory. We've tested with PDFs over 1,000 pages and 200 MB. Modern browsers handle this well. If you hit a memory issue, try closing other tabs.

Do you store or access my files?

No. Your PDF is processed entirely in your browser's memory. Nothing is sent to any server. When you close the tab, the data is gone. We have no way to access, read, or store your documents.

Can I split and then merge some pages back together?

Yes! Split your PDF here, then use our Merge PDF tool to combine specific output files into a new document. Both tools are lossless, so you can chain them without any quality degradation.

PDFriend's Split PDF is part of a full suite of offline-first PDF tools — including Merge PDF, Compress PDF, Rotate PDF, and Organise PDF. Every tool works in your browser with zero uploads and full integrity verification.
